Link Resource Database
Links to reliable sources (news articles, research, and analysis) for informed opposition to dragnet mass surveillance.
This database focuses on facts and reporting rather than opinion or philosophy. The more reliable, the better. We're looking for things that can be presented to elected officials and other decision-makers as independent, reliable sources that they should take seriously.
Got one not listed here? Update or tagging suggestions? Email us.

MIT Technology Review Β· 2026-02-23
Oak Park Paywall"The data revealed that in the first 10 months of operation, the eight Flock license plate readers the town had deployed scanned 3,000,000 plates. But only 42 scans led to an alertβan infinitesimal yield of 0.000014%. At the same time, the impact was disproportionate. While Oak Park's population of about 53,000 is only 19% Black, Black drivers made up 85% of those flagged by the Flock cameras, seemingly amplifying what were already concerning racial disparities in the village's traο¬c stops."

π License Plate Surveillance Startup Broke The Law While Trying To Reduce Crime
Jalopnik Β· 2024-02-27
FL SC TX WA Flocked Up Illegal"In June of 2022, an Illinois DOT official in contact with Flock representatives told the company it had many repeated, error-filled permit applications for camera installations. A Flock representative gave the IDOT official a thinly-veiled threat that if they didn't fast-track the process, Flock would send "about 30 different police chiefs" to their office to talk to them about it."

π Champaign's trial run of gunshot detection program fires blanks
CU-CitizenAccess Β· 2023-12-15
Champaign Analysis Audio Surveillance"Six months of data documented on the detectors, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, shows the system collected alerts for 64 total incidents. These incidents took place between April 8 and October 8 this year. But 59 alerts marked as unfounded, which means the device falsely detected a gunshot or the device failed to detect a gunshot. In 21 of the unfounded incidents, it was determined that fireworks likely triggered the detector. Five of the alerts were tagged as founded, meaning the detector accurately indicated and located gunfire. In four out of the five incidents, citizens had also called in and reported the gunshot."
